Walkers are never asked who they are. Organisations give us what we need to run their account, and nothing is sold or shared for marketing.

Who we are
Waymarker is a trading name of Beatnik Studio Limited, registered in England and Wales (No. 10307236), based at Cobalt 3.1, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE27 0QJ. In this policy, “we” and “us” means Beatnik Studio Limited.
For the personal data described here we are the controller, except where we say an organisation is. To ask about anything in this policy, email [email protected].
If you walk a journey
Journey sites are published by the organisation named on them, using Waymarker. You don’t need an account, and you are never asked for your name, email address or phone number.
- Your progress stays on your phone. The stops you check in at, your stamps and your completion are kept in your browser’s storage on your own device. They are not sent to us or to the organisation. Clearing your browser’s data for the site removes them.
- We don’t ask for your location. Checking in is something you do yourself; the journey site doesn’t read your position.
- Usage is counted, not tracked. So that organisations can see how their journeys are used, journey sites record events such as a journey being started, a stop being reached and a journey being completed. These are tied to the journey, not to you: they carry no name, contact details or account, and we don’t use them to identify you or follow you between sites.
Like every website, our hosting provider receives your IP address and browser details when it serves a page. These technical logs are used to keep the service running and secure, and are not used to build a picture of you.
If you visit this website
If you accept analytics cookies, Google Analytics records how you use waymarker.place: the pages you view, how you arrived, your device and browser type, and your approximate location, worked out from your IP address. It doesn’t tell us who you are, and we use it only to see which pages are useful. Google handles this data for us under its data processing terms, with its advertising features turned off. If you reject analytics cookies, or don’t answer, none of this happens.
Journey sites never use Google Analytics.
If you get in touch
When you email us — to book a demo, ask a question or report a problem — we keep your message, your name and email address, and any details about your organisation you choose to give, so we can reply and keep a record of the conversation. We don’t add you to a mailing list or send you automated emails.
If your organisation uses Waymarker
To provide the service under your licence, we hold:
- the names and email addresses of the people who sign in to build journeys
- contact and billing details for your organisation
- a record of changes made in the builder, so that work can be recovered and support can help
The journeys you publish — text, images, audio and route information — belong to your organisation. We store and serve them on your behalf. If that content includes personal data, such as a photograph of a person, your organisation is the controller of it and we act as its processor.
Why we use it
UK data protection law requires a lawful basis for each use. Ours are:
- Consent — for analytics cookies on this website. You can withdraw it at any time with Cookie settings at the foot of every page.
- Contract — to provide Waymarker to organisations that hold a licence, and to the people who use it on their behalf.
- Legitimate interests — to reply to enquiries, keep journey sites running and secure, and show organisations how their journeys are used.
- Legal obligation — to keep financial records we are required to keep.
We never sell personal data or use it for advertising.
Where it is held
Waymarker is hosted in the UK. Its database is held in Supabase’s London region, and the service runs on DigitalOcean in its London region. Both providers act as our processors under written contracts. Some of their support and infrastructure is based outside the UK; where that involves personal data, the transfer is covered by the safeguards UK data protection law requires.
If you accept analytics cookies on this website, Google also processes data for us, as described above, and some of that processing takes place outside the UK under the same safeguards.
We share personal data with nobody else, unless the law requires us to.
How long we keep it
- Enquiries — for two years after we last heard from you, unless they lead to a licence.
- Builder accounts — for as long as your organisation’s licence runs, then deleted within 90 days of it ending, once your organisation has had the chance to export its content.
- Journey usage events — individual events for eighteen months; after that only totals are kept, such as how many people completed a journey in a month.
- Website analytics — no more than 14 months, then deleted by Google.
- Financial records — for six years, as UK law requires.
- Hosting logs — for the short period our hosting provider keeps them.
Your rights
You have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you
- have it corrected if it is wrong
- have it deleted
- object to, or ask us to restrict, how we use it
- receive data you gave us in a format you can take elsewhere
Email [email protected] to use any of these. We will respond within one month. If your request is about content on a journey site, we will pass it to the organisation that published it, since they control that content.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113. We would appreciate the chance to put it right first.
Cookies
Our cookie policy explains what Waymarker stores in your browser and why, and how to change your choice about analytics cookies.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we use personal data, we will update this page and the date at the top. If a change affects organisations with a licence, we will tell them directly before it takes effect.
Twenty minutes, your route, no slides.
Tell us about a walk you already promote and we’ll show you what it looks like as a Waymarker journey. If it isn’t a fit, we’ll say so on the call.
